Equinox VS 400 Fogger Smoke Machine MK2; How it works
A fog machine; fog generator; or smoke machine (all the same thing); is a device that emits a dense vapour; that appears similar to fog or smoke. This artificial fog is most commonly used in professional entertainment applications; but smaller, more affordable fog machines are becoming common for personal use; such as this one; the Equinox VS 400 Fogger; Smoke Machine MK2.
These fog machines are also used in a variety of industrial; training; and some military applications. Typically; fog is created by vaporising proprietary water and glycol-based or glycerin-based fluids; or through the atomisation of mineral oil. This fluid (often referred to colloquially as fog juice); vaporises or atomises inside the fog machine. Upon exiting the fog machine and mixing with cooler outside air the vapour condenses; resulting in a thick visible fog.
Heated Fog Machines;
Heated fog machines use either an inert gas or an electric pump to propel mineral oil; also glycol; or glycerin. It then uses a water mixture; sending it altogether into a heat exchanger. This solution is then vaporised. The most commonly encountered form of heated fog machine is the pump machine; like the Equinox VS 400 Fogger Smoke Machine MK2. Very basic models of this type of machine consist of a fluid reservoir; an electric pump to move the fog fluid and heat exchanger; which vaporises the fluid.
More complex models may include a variety of other features; including variable speed pumps to control the output of fog; timer modules; or components for remote operation and monitoring of the fog machines’ status. Some manufacturers have produced accessories and fluids; that when combined with an ordinary heated pump machine; create fog effects similar to chilled fog machines. Gas propelled fog machines use an inert gas (most commonly CO2 or nitrogen) to propel either mineral oil; or a glycol based fluid into a heat exchanger; where it is vaporised into particles; creating a fog. Some models of gas propelled fog machines provide control over the output of fog, by varying the volume of gas used to propel the fluid.
Taking Care of your Fog or Haze Machine;
We take great care to ensure that all our machines are calibrated and tested with the correct fluid to ensure maximum life and performance from the product; thus ensuring we know they heat at the correct temperature to evaporate; without leaving large residue in the elements and piping.
Let’s face it; fog and Haze machines are systematically fragile in their nature; they combine the three elements you don’t really want to combine; electric; heat; and water! Any contaminant within the fluid itself; or any fluctuation in level of the chemical concentration of the fluid will result in crystallisation; which inevitably will block the internal piping of the unit.
This can of course be helped by use of distilled water run through the machines cycle for a short period of time; and after each use. This in turn; helps to clear and clean some of the internal parts. If the machine is to be left unused for any length of time; then use of a cleaning fluid will certainly help clean it down further; as this contains an active element, which helps to break down any further crystallisation. Think of it like use of premium fuels for your car!
